I have always been interested in woodwork, in fact an ancestor has a mention in the Doomsday book as ‘Village Carpenter of Fawley’.

My own woodturning inspiration goes back to my school days when I helped unload three new Graduate wood lathes into our carpenters shop.  Woodturning allows me the opportunity to be creative at my own pace using my judgment to obtain the best from a piece of natural material, and if it doesn’t work, the wood burner will see designer firewood again this winter.

The majority of my timber is local to the New Forest area.  I have a preference for English hardwoods and fruitwoods such as Ash, Beech, Elm, Oak, Yew, Cherry, Apple & Plum.  They not only have beautiful grain and colour but are either wind blow or harvested under a controlled system without damage to the environment.  OK, so Yew is technically a soft wood but have you tried cutting it.

Most of my bowls and platters are finished in food grade oils or natural waxes.  They can be wiped with cool clean water and when dried re-oiled using food grade oils including salad oils, walnut oil or foods grade mineral oil which will restore the original colour and protection.

I hope you enjoy viewing the examples of my work as much as I have enjoyed creating it.
